I'm using Installshield for Software deployment for quite a while now.
However, I'm reading and hearing a lot of SMS as software deployment 'method'.
Can someone explain me when SMS is actually usefull to use, how to use(can it be freely installed), where to get it, is it usefull for software deployment to customers or only for internal deployment, etc...??
I've been reading some information on the microsoft site and have been reading about SMS 2003 but I can't get a clear picture about what SMS is and does?!
Thanks for any information.

SMS is a deployment and reporting tool for the enterprise network. It doesn't build setup packages, it only distributes them and reports inventories. SMS can deploy MSI packages but you would need a tool like InstallShield to build these MSI packages. A special edition of AdminStudio is available free of charge for SMS users for this purpose.
