I have an MSI package that requires MSDE as a pre-requisite. I am trying to install it using a nested custom action(type 23). However I find the SDK documentation extremely confusing. It says:

"The location of the nested installation package is specified relative to the root of the source location by the Source field of the CustomAction table."

My installation source is as follows:

SourceDir
- MSDERelA
-- Setup(with the sql2000.msi that needs to be installed)

I have tried all options but haven't got a clue what to enter in the source column. The install always fails with code 1713.

Nested install custom actions should be avoided.

I only got a CA 23 working by storing the child MSI next to the parent MSI, i.e. <SOURCEDIR>.
In that case, source should contain the text "Sql2000.msi".
