What happens if you don't designate key files?

I don't use key files, and it seems everything works just fine. I know what they are for and how they are used, but I cannot find any information about the opposite situtation - that is, what functionality you lose, and really how the windows installer works when no key file is designated.

Does the installer compare each and every file in the component instead of just the key file when no key file is established?

BTW: In another post, I reported false/invalid val0004 errors and by taking away the key file designation the errors go away and patches still work.

I believe windows installer defaults to using the directory as the keypath for a component if you don't designate a file.
