The Directory filed for the component controls where the files get installed (you guessed that already...)
The Directory field for the feature is only a means to change the value of this directory identifier. If a feature has destination INSTALLDIR2 users can select this feature in the feature tree dialog, click the browse button and specify a custom location. This will change the value of INSTALLDIR2 to the specified directory, but other directories such as INSTALLDIR1 will remain unchanged.
