Apart from the file version logic (install only when a higher version found), How can i prevent an old merge module is getting installed on a new merge module installed. ?.
Is it possible to have an upgrade table logic for msm files similar to the msi upgrade table logic ?.
I am looking for a solution for replacing files which will be centralized solution rather than a componenet level solution ?

If your msm has higher version property, it should not overwrite the older merge module automatically (unlike msi where you have to populate the Upgrade table for this and add CA 19)

could you please elaberate on 'Higher version property' ?.
