i'm looking to mark a file to be removed on reboot. what's the best way to go about doing this?
i would like to mark the file to be removed without prompting the user to actually reboot their system. eventually when the user reboots this file (and its directory) are to be removed.
suggestions?

aparently there is no way to do this. or at least no one has figured out a way to do this.
but there is an issue with the "files in use" dialog during uninstall with the user choosing "ignore" instead of closing down the offending application during uninstall.
how are people handling this problem?

What's the issue with the file in use dialog?

in the "files in use" dialog there is an "ignore" button. this button can not be dissabled. thus during uninstall if the user chooses to "ignore" the "files in use" dialog then there are files left behind.
so the solution would be to create a CA that checks for files in use and display the "offending" applications then requesting that they be shut down before uninstall can take place.
but... what if the application can not be shut down and the file is still locked? for example... what if you had an addin to Windows Explorer. the user would have to shut down Windows Explorer before uninstalling. that is not an elegant solution.
so i would like to mark these files as permanent in the install and then tell windows to delete them on reboot during an uninstall, but not force the reboot on the user. the next time the user reboots on their own then the file(s) will be removed.
are there any other ideas?

When the user clicks the Ignore button these files should automatically be scheduled for deletion during the next reboot. Is this not the case?

no... this doesn't seem to be happening.
right now if the user chooses "ignore" the files are left behind and the user is not given the option to reboot. even if the user reboots these files are still left behind.
