We have created a minor upgrade for our product, and have produce an msp file for existing customers and a msi file for new customers. If the msp file is used for the upgrade, and then an attempt is made to modify with the msi file an error is generated stating that the "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation cannot continue." Can you offer any advise. It is as if the patch does not update the product version.

This message is displayed if you install a product using one package, and then try to modify it (enter maintenance mode) using a different package.
Run the original (old version) msi instead. The .msp will automatically be re-applied. Or better: use Control Panel.
