EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Palo Alto-based VMware, Inc. in a cash transaction valued at approximately $635 million. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, and is expected to be completed early in the first quarter of 2004.
VMware is one of the leading providers of virtual infrastructure software. Their virtual workstation and server products compete with VirtualPC, which has been acquired by Microsoft earlier this year.
EMC is a provider of information lifecycle and storage management.
