I'm wondering how I can make InstallShield 5.53 display a popup message box when a component is selected in DialogShowSdAskComponents().

If I'm not mistaken, IS 5.x has the script for the different dialogs. Find the correct one and make a copy in your script and modify it (probably the name too). After a selection in the routine, use ComponentIsItemSelected to see what was selected and use your messaging.
