Hi Stefan and all,
Is anyone successfully running a major upgrade of a previously installed
named instance of MSDE 2000 SP3? What steps would be necessary to
accomplish this?

There are many problems with the MSDE merge modules. this may be one of them (I'm not sure). I've never tried this. Microsoft recommends not to use these merge modules.
