Hi

I have an application that have to be installed in silent/passive mode. The
first installation goes well. When I try to execute a silent/passive
installation of the new version (new msi version), the application files are
updated but in the Add/Remove Program interface, there exist 2 instances of
the application for each of the msi (even though there is only one instance
installed on the computer). On the other hand, when I execute the new version
in full UI mode, everything goes well.

any ideas..

Thanks in advance!

If you are recieving two copies in add remove programs then it is not upgrading correctly, or it is not hiding itself from the add remove programs menu.

During interactive mode, there are probably some properies set that you are missing during your silent install. You will need to find what these are and pass them in during your silent install.

You could run with log mode turned on to work out what is different.

Make sure the ALLUSERS proeprty has the same value in both cases (i.e. if ou installed the first version per-machine do the same with the upgrade version).
A verbose log should also help diagnosing the problem.

Thanks luke and Stefan!

The issue was originated from the ALLUSERS param. The first installation is set to per-machine. I manually set the re-installation package to 1 in the msi db (using Orca), but it seems that the silent mode default overwrites this param.
The re-installation executes well with the ALLUSERS=1.

Cheers!
