i've seen the article at

about MSI launchers. i'm wondering if there are any others. particularly ones that can compress the MSI within setup.exe.

If you want to do a custom job, the source code for Setup.exe is provided by Microsoft with the SDK.

The platform SDK, it includes orca and some sample projects, the relative path under the installation directory for the samples is
Samples\SysMgmt\Msi
Samples\SysMgmt\Msi
