1) If you are making a Web releaes in Release Wizard and select One Executable...
2) you must also select "Cache Installation on local machine" (two dialogs further down) or you will NOT be able to apply a patch.

You will get:
"Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product <your product>. The Windows Installer cannot continue."

If this is works-as-designed, InstallShield should put a little more information to this effect on the "Cache installation on local machine" dialog.

I'm working in a Windows Installer Project and I don't seem to get a dialog that allows me to specify to cache the installation on the local machine.  Are you working in a Standard Project?

I can set this after-the-fact (after running Release Wizard).  It's one of the properties if you select the 'release' in the Releases view.
