Using [INSTALLDIR] & other paths in installscript

Please can anyone tell me how I can use path variables already set through the INSTALLDIR and component paths (in the path variable table). I basically need to be able to base some scripts on the installation and not hard code them into the script. I also need to ensure that there is a default INSTALLDIR (which there is), but if it detects another path of another product it will install or copy the product into that folder. I've not used scripts before, so if anyone has any example code it would be most appreciated.
