If a merge module is conditional, are it's dependancies too?

I'm wondering if i make a merge module conditional, are the dependancies for it conditional as well. In other words, if i don't install the module, will the dependancies not install either.

I'm thinking that i make a MSM that checks if SQL is installed. If so, it creates a simple 1byte file on the HD. The MSDE2K modules are dependancies of this module. If it's not installed, would MSDE2K not install either?
