Hello,

I'm posting this message to see if someone has some ideas on how to fix the problem we have with MSI.

It seems that msiexec.exe crashes every time we run an installation. The behaviour is only on our test machine, and for every msi file we try to run (not just our own, but also msi files from other companies,...)

The installation reaches the Welcome Dialog and sometimes a few dialogs further, but eventually crashes and the following message is written in the application event log:

---
Faulting application msiexec.exe, version 3.1.4000.1433, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x04ebdcf6.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft....link/events.asp.
---

I don't think one can do much with that error message ;-)
I'll also attach an excerpt of the Log File at the end of this message, but we didn't get much info there either.

My question is therfore: Does someone have an idea how to fix the installer other then reinstalling it (or the entire system by rolling back to a previous drive image) ?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time for this.

Igor.

Looks like you are using a pre-release version of MSI 3.1. Version 3.1.4000.1823 was the first release version of MSI 3.1.

I have similar problem at the moment.
W2K3 with SP1, cannot run certain installation package, then installed 893803 as suggested. But problem is still there.
When start the server, there are two problem popups that suggests to send to MS. Did that, and can find Error Message in the Application Logs as follow:

When trying to run MS Sharepoint Service v.2.0 (setupsts.exe) installation, checked the  "Accept ...." and then click Next, the Windows Installer stuck, and the installation window disappear in 2 minutes time. (the STS20 was installed successfully, and then removed it and renamed the box, and then trying to install it again, and stuck.) The following Error log can be found.

This same thing happened on other boxes with W2K3 with SP1 when trying to
install Symantec AntiVirus Client v9. It happened after removing the SAV8 Client. Ended up with reinstalling W2K3 with SP1 OS, and installed SAV9 Client before running Microsoft Update. And it was OK.

Any idea? Looks like there are numorers problems on windows Installer v3.1.
Is there a way to uninstall it and install V2.0 instead?

Many thanks
