To keep you updated about the lawsuit, here are links to some press articles:

COMPUTERWOLRD

Detroit Free Press

Computer Weekly

The essence of Wise's replies is:

  • "Wise has a reputation of honesty and integrity, and nothing like this has every happened before in our history"
  • Patrick Ziarnik, chief legal counsel for Wise, did not dispute having InstallShield's customer database.
  • Wise says the customer database has been publicly available, which Wise claims to have determined through a "forensic investigation". (InstallSield insists that it was password protected)
  • Wise is cooperating with federal officials and has hired a private computer security firm to determine what happened.

A court date has not yet been set.

If you post a large amount of customer information on a (by definition insecure) FTP-server, and are unable to detect someone accessing this information for a long period of time. There are two things to say about this:

1. Bad sysadmins!!! (for having sensitive information on a FTP server)
2. Bad sysadmins!!! (for not noticing Wise accessing the server frequently)

This makes InstallShield look bad in terms of security and caring for customerdata.
