How to deal with a silent installation and the final reboot?

What is, to your mind, the best approach among these possibilities:

1. Let the setup reboot the machine silently at the end.
2. Never reboot the machine silently, possibly writing a warning into the log file telling a reboot is necessary.
3. At the end of the installation display a messagebox anyway (as it would be displayed in interactive mode)
4. ...?

Thank you for giving your opinion.

1-2 it depends on your Product - it is so critical to force reboot?
3. Wrong. It may interrupts the installation - e.g. when deploying in AD as a per-machine-installation is going there are no UI at all. No force User Interface must be in the silent mode.

It depends on your Product which is going be installed in general

Thank you for your reply.
It's interesting.

Well, (1) seems to be pretty "wild", don't you think?

(3) would be the workaround for (1) but it breaks definitely the principle of the silent mode. I agree.

(2) is maybe the fairest solution but may not satisfy some sys admin.

Hard to choose between these options as I am not really aware about the best practise in the real world.

nb: I've just asked my sys admin, he said he would prefer (3), weird wacko.gif

well, about (1) - when you run your installation like this:
msiexec /i <MSI-file> /qb-
it will be the force reboot without demand (if it will be necessary) - the "-" character works so.
