Piping return values between installations

I would like to be able to pipe the return result of a function contained in a subsidiary installation to the master installation which invokes it. Obviously, I could output the result into a text file and have the main installation read that file. However, I was wondering if anyone had any brighter ideas: all suggestions must work for Installshield 5.3.

Perhaps you can write some data to the registration database.
Then you can read it in from the first install.
We use this to allow an IS 3.X project to 'report back' to an IS 5.X project.
