Microsoft has released Service Pack 6 for Visual Studio 6. There are also updated merge modules available for download to be used with Visual Basic 6.0 and Visual C++ 6.0. The download is available here

Reportedly there are problem with at least one of the new merge modules (mfc42). It is missing proper component conditions and therefore tries to update files that are under system file protection. this can trigger warnings during installation, and unexpected auto-repairs afterwards. The problem is under investigation by Microsoft. For the time being I'd recommend to continue using the previous version.
