Hi forum,

we need to set file permissions on files that have been installed by an earlier version of our setup (WISE 7.0). Because these files are unversioned xml files, they won't be updated if the customer simply installs a new release of our product.

I know that what we want is quite against the rules, but does anybody know a workaround for this issue?

Main reason for this is Vista or, to be correct, the structure of our software which is not fitting to vistas VirtualStore technique. Our customers want their files still in the app folder.

Best wishes,
Torben

I know your scenario very well: customers don't want change - "it's worked like this for a long time", etc... Unfortunately things tend to work till the door that was half open gets slammed shut. Vista locks down lots of stuff, and it is time to adapt the applications to follow the rules to avoid future problems. So far it's been possible to tweak Windows to allow bad application designs, but Vista is now fighting back more than ever.

Still, to achieve what you want you can use subinacl.exe from microsoft from a custom action, VBScript or a range of other methods capable of tweaking DACLs, ACLs...
