Wise Solutions, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Altiris, Inc., has released the new version 6.0 of their Wise for Windows Installer product family. There are three product editions: Standard, Professional, and Enterprise. Visual Studio .NET integration is now included in Wise for Windows Installer Professional and Enterprise, thus making the Wise for Visual Studio product line obsolete.
Improvements in version 6 include:
- Enhanced web application support (create web site and virtual directories, edit web.config files, install to web farms, etc.)
- Improved SQL Server support
- Improved Dialog editing
- Support for MSI 3 (see note below), including patch sequencing and pre-installing the MSI 3 runtime
- and more
Wise for Windows Installer 6 is prepared for MSI 3, but until Microsoft releases the SDK and runtime installer, the MSI 3 functionality is not really usable. The release notes include instructions how to manually enable MSI 3 support once the files have been released (or using an RC build if you are in the MSI 3 beta program). Wise developed and tested with the RC1 build of MSI 3. Therefore the release notes warn that "unexpected results may occur with the final version of the runtime".
