Problems with conditionally installing components

I have a setup with 3 features, say A, B & C, within Feature B there are two mutally exclusive components B1 and B2 (if one gets installed the other doesn't). If I run throught the install with Feature B selected everything works fine (the correct component goes to the right place based on it's condition), but if I run the setup without selecting B for installation and then re-run it and add Feature B during maintenance, component B2 always gets installed even if B1 should be installed as it's condition is true. I've checked the conditions and InstallDirs of the two components and both evaluate properly (and identically) in both installation and maintenance, yet the wrong component is installed, anyone got any ideas?
