I would like know if my target computer is a server or a workstation (both on w2k).

One way to accomplish this test would be to build a custom action around the API call VerifyVersionInfo. This is part of Kernel32.dll and was implemented in Win 2000. I have not had the opportunity to test this, yet, but will probably be using it in my install for server components. Please send me an email if you would like to discuss this in greater detail.
