I have noticed that in the subkeys of
CODE
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\]

there are a lot of entries that have "C?\" instead of "C:\"

E.g.
[...\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\0020E082E92F97B46BC5585867E5A05A]
"9040110900063D11C8EF10054038389C"="C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSCAL.HLP"

It seems as if there are some installed programs that have all of the "C?\"s,
and it's not all of those programs components..

E.g. for Office 2003, there are some components in \OFFICE11\ folder,
but only these 15 files (of 187):
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\AW.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\DSITF.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\DSSM.EXE
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\GRAPH.EXE
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\HLP95EN.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSACCESS.EXE
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSCAL.HLP
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSCAL.OCX
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSOSTYLE.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSQRY32.EXE
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSRTEDIT.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\PROFLWIZ.EXE
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\REFEDIT.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\SAEXT.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\UNBIND.EXE

And there are some components in \OFFICE11\1033\ folder,
but only these 6 files (of 234):
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\GRINTL32.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\MSOHELP.EXE
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\OFMAIN11.CHM
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\QRYINT32.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\UNBIND10.DLL
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\VBAOF11.CHM

I've tried to make a list of my installed "C?\" programs,
(and which of their folders that are affected):

Office 2003
C?\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\
C?\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\
C?\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\

.NET Framework
C?\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\

Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional
C?\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Linguistics\

Autodesk 3ds max 6.0
C?\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\

Macromedia Contribute 3.0 + FlashPaper 2.0
C?\Program Files\Macromedia\Contribute 3\
C?\Program Files\Macromedia\FlashPaper 2\

Sony Sound Forge 7.0
C?\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\

This make me believe that it must be the .msi installers for those specific
programs that are responsible

My questions, which I hope that someone can try to answer, are:
  • Is there anyone else that have these errors in their registry? (Search for C?\ )
  • Why has this happened?
  • Will it affect me, and if so, how?
  • Should I fix this manually? (Export -> Notepad -> Replace.. -> Import)
With regards,
Clokkevi.

Great question!! I've been wondering the same thing for years, and I've never found the answer!
