I've read through (some of) the documentation, and discovered that if you are going to pass a string to a function that declares the parameter as BYREF, then you must give the string variable a length in its declaration. Is this still true for IS Pro 7?

Shouldn't be at all - a BYREF just passes the adress of the variable in memory. This will always be the same size, dependent on your hardware.
