Hello,

I tried to look at the list archive, but it said no messages had been
posted to the list, so I thought I'd try sending something to see if
anyone was out there.

I have a user who is trying to install one of our products and having
problems on 3 out of 8 machines.  These are 8 laptops, all running
Windows 95A, some with the French localization, some with IE 4, some
with IE 5.  There is no consistency between the ones with the
localization or with a certain version of IE, in the three machines
where it fails.  They have turned off everything so there are no
programs in the System Tray, they disable their Virus Scanner (Norton),
they've emptied out their Temp directory, and cleaned out the registry
for all references to InstallShield as well as our products.  The
install starts up and gets to the end of the "<product> Setup is
preparing the InstallShield Wizard..." progress bar, and then this error
appears.  The click Ok, they get the error again immiediately, they
click Ok a second time, and then the install will continue as normal.
However, if they choose a Typical install, nothing gets installed, and
if they choose Custom, then no components are listed as installable.
The install was created with IS Pro 6.11.

Anyone had any luck finding a workaround or solution to this problem, or
any ideas to try?

Best regards,

Rob Thornton

Are they connected to a network? Some people have reported that changing the
network configuration (disconnecting, connecting, removing network support) has
helped, "sometimes". This error is very weired, and there's no solution or
workaround (except format c:).

InstallShield is researching this problem. They should have (or receive soon) a
hard disk drive with a configuration that exposes the behaviour. Hopefully this
will enable them to reproduce the problem and solve it.

BTW the list archive was empty because the list just moved to ListBot. It didn't
have an archive before.

Kind regards,

Stefan Krueger

Just to let everyone know, InstallShield told me to upgrade to 6.12 and
rebuild the media.  I did that and it had no effect.  The second thing
they told me to do was upgrade to 6.22 and rebuild.  I did that and it
worked.  So 6.22 was a solution for me.

You are the first person I know of reporting that an update solved the problem.
Did you have the 0x800400707 error during setup initialization, or the
DosExecPgm?

It was during setup initialization.  It occurred at the end of the

... and it was 0x800400707 or DosExecPgm ?

(typically you get DosExecPgm with IS 6.1, and 0x800400707 with 6.2)

Hi Robert,

How did you "upgrade" installshield? By running the ikernel.exe update?

Thanks, Barry

Hi, my name is Carrie. I was following the thread. I FINALLY fixed my puter.
I have a 1998 Compaq, InstallShield 6.21, Windows 98, IE 5.0, with Quicken
2000 installed. I tried to install QuickBooks Pro 2001. I was told I needed
IE 5.5. So I downloaded it(5.5)  and tried re-loading quickbooks and
unloading and reloading and eventually froze quickbooks in there. It wouldnt
install or uninstall. I unloaded Quicken hoping that would help...it didnt.
Finally yesterday I went to WinSite and downloaded a trial version of
Add/Remove Plus 2000 which completely removes a program. It worked. I used it
to completely remove QuickBooks and then was able to load it again
completely... no problem. Hope this helps someone...

I don't believe that has anything to do with the problem that we've been

I am getting this error on 3 different laptops. They are all running Win2K
Pro. One difference is that on one of them I get the "DosExecPgm" error and
the other two produce the other error. I recently rebuilt one of these
laptop and monitored for this error along the way. I installed Win2k Pro and
tested for the error, it did not occur. I installed the drivers for the
laptop (Compaq Armada E500) and all the patches for Win2K Pro and tested for
the error, it did not occur. The error was noticed after I joined the Win
NT4 domain of my company. Since that step I can not get rid of the error.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure what version of Installshield  that
the software company is using to build the install. I am in contact with
them also but have not had any luck.

Subject:  [DosExecPgm] I can reproduce this problem at will

I have been able to reproduce this problem numerous times on different
hardware. It is not very difficult. In one example I took a Compaq Armada
1750 and installed vanilla Win2k Pro, no updates, no SPs, etc. The only
external hardware used was a Xircom CBE2-100 network card. The installation
CD was Great Plains Siebel Front Office 6.0 Client. It uses version
6.2.100.1253 of InstallShield based on the version of IKernel.exe. After
installing Win2k and logging in as Administrator I ran the installation for
GPSFO it worked, no error. I then joined my companies Windows NT4 network
domain and rebooted. The error now occurs everytime I run the install.

I don't have an answer for this problem but maybe this will help come up
with a solution.

In trying to install on a few customer sites, we have encountered this
problem, and so far found no solution.

We use IS 6.1 and there we get the dosexecpgm error message, i have tried
updating the ikernel to 6.2.2 version using InstallShields package and the
error changes to the 0x80040707 form.

For what its worth - here are the environment details:

> Windows version,  NT 4
> language English
> service pack, SP 6a
> regional settings, English (UK)
> virus scanners, Norton Antivirus (version 7.03)
> Internet Explorer, version 5

> MS Office 95 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
> MS Access 97

> Ascent Capture 3.2
> RMS Change Management
> ABT Team Workbench
> Seagate Crystal Reports 7

Same customer has 95 machines that install with no problem. 3 NT machines
exhibit this problem.

Any thoughts on lines of inquiry would be appreciated.

Subject:  [DosExecPgm] Experts on 0x80040707?

I understood that this is a discussion list for the error 0x80040707
in InstallShield and that we are all invited to provide as much info
as possible. So here I go:

I'm just an end-user of PGP Freeware 703, so rebuilding etc. is no
option for me. As only on some machines manifest this problem it
may be some third party 'updated' dll causes the problem. I will exactly

describe the situation below:

OS: Windows '98 SE with all updates from Microsoft

Installing PGP Freeware 703 (digital signature correct, so file is not
corrupt) I got the following behaviour, which is likely caused by
InstallShield:

Executing PGPfreeware7.0.3.exe starts with the pop-up:
     PGP Self-extracting archive
Please wait while PGP extracts the files which will install
         this application for you

The progress-indicator shows a full blue bar after some time

Next, the following pop-up is shown:
     PGP Install Wizard
PGP Setup is preparing the PGP Install Wizard, which will
guide you through the rest of the setup process. Please wait.

The progress indicator runs until 100%. Then the following window
pops up:

     Internal Failure
        Error Number: 0x80040707
        Description:

After clicking Ok, the last window pops up again.
After clicking Ok again, the PGP Install Wizard comes with the
finish window, but unfortunately no PGP has been installed.

Does any InstallShield expert has an idea about:
- what causes this error
- which dll's are usually called at this point of installation (gives me

the possibility to compare them between working and failing
  installations)

Thank you all for your time!

Regards,
Hans Petri.

One pc it worked, the other pc's donot.
I have tried to make the pc's almost the same, but still each time the
dosexecpgm problem.

Is there still no solution for this problem.
The work around's clearing TEMP dir, delete engine directory in common file of
installshield, scandisk, reinstall internet explorer v5.5 did not work either.

Does anybody know the solution

That's very interesting. Has anyone else tested with the new IS 6.30 maintenance
release?
you may not even need to rebuild your setup. Running any setup created with 6.30
(e.g. an empty dummy setup) should update the iKernel engine on the target
machine. Thereafter even your setup built with 6.1 or 6.2 should use the newer
engine. So you can try this without actually updating to 6.30.

To make updating the InstallShield engine on your test machine as easy as
possible I've created an "empty" setup with IS 6.30. All it does it initialize
(and thus update the engine files on the target machine), display a message box
and abort (in OnBegin).
The file can be downloaded from
http://www.installsi.../DosExecPgm.exe
(file name is case sensitive!)

I'm looking forward to the test results.

I guess you were using IS 6.1 before. 0x80040707 and DosExecPgm are actual the
same error. Only the error message changed from IS 6.1 to IS 6.2 (and 6.3). So
it seems that it's not fixed, at least not in the 6.3 engine files.

You can try with the setup.exe from 6.3. Start the DosExecPgm.exe you
downloaded. When the message box appears, look in your TEMP directory. You will
find the setup files there (in a sub folder).

If this doesn't fix the problem either, there's still a chance that rebuilding
the setup with 6.3 could solve the problem. However that would require that you
update your InstallShield version.

BTW does the problem happen with ANY setup on the failing machine, or is it just
reproducible with ONE setup project? If it's a machine problem (which I believe
is the case with the DosExecPgm error) then you should have had the same problem
with my DosExecPgm.exe setup, right? So this might indicate that 6.3 is the
solution. (Hoping...)

Nop

The new setup.exe does not do the trick, still the same error.

I cannot rebuild the set-up because the product is not of us. We even does not
have installshield at all.
And the people from which it is are not so coorperative .
They say that i am the only one with the problem and they refuse to do
something.

We have to put more pressure on those people.

Thanks for your work so far.

I had the problem on 2 machines.
One machine just had received a new image (complete harddisk image) for testing.
The whole depart will get the new image.
So if the whole appartment gets the new image. I will not be able to install
that product on any machine of that department.

It is ONE setup project which fails.

The DosExecPgm.exe setup runs fine. But you are not installing any files in
that setup.

Granted, but the error occurs during setup initialization. No script is executed
and no files are installed at that time. So that shouldn't make a difference.

am using InstallShield Professional edition 2000 (6.11).  My scripts are
compiled on Windows 2000.  The error occurs before it even gets to my
installation scripts.  Our splash screen comes up and then there is the
dialog box for preparing InstallShield and once it is half way through on
the task bar it crashes with the below message. Some of the machines are
networked and other are not, (it fails on both).
Other flakiness I have been seeing with IS6.11 and NT 4.0 SP6 is that on
some all .dlls get registered where as others only a few fail to register.
I am using the Installshield Self register option for the registration of
the dlls.
Will IPSI6.3 fix this flakiness with Win NT?

We finally came up with something that works - the trouble seems to be caused by
ODBC drivers, so we have installed MS SQL 6.5 client onto the workstations, and
this has solved the above issues. It may be worth trying this with products
apart from Siebel.

We found that if you install something that was made with "Package &
Deployment Wizard"
of VB6, and then try to run the IS it goes with not problem.
Aviad.

Subject:  [DosExecPgm] Internal Error 0x80040707

Like many other people, we are currently experiencing this error during the extraction of the setup media.

Developement details:

English Windows 2000 SP1,
192MB RAM
InstallShield 6.12,
DAO, VB6 and ODBC objects
Setup is 45MB.

Client system details:

French Windows NT 4 (SP5),
Internet Explorer 4.
128MB RAM
Plenty of HD.

Details of error:

Run setup.exe, extracts files to about 99%, temporary files are visible, internal error message is shown twice and then no setuptypes can be seen.
I suspect that it cannot locate the SUPPORTDIR, since my custom bitmaps cannot be seen (although it is visible in explorer).

The problem has not appeared on English OS's (yet!)

I have tried everything below:

Rebooting/Scandisk
Installing latest service pack 6a and IE5.5
Disconnect/Reconnect from network
Clearing out TEMP directory and renaming it too!
Replacing with DOSEXECPGM.exe and 6.3 setup.exe/_ikernel.exe too!

Please let me know if you any of you have a similar system and have resolved the problem.

Regards
