Disable feature in selection tree

Is there a way to permanently disable a feature from the selection tree?? I understand that setting INSTALLLEVEL=0 makes the feature disappear from the tree. Does any one know how to keep a feature permanently crossed??

They way I do this is by setting the install level of the component to 0, but also defaulting its install status to install/not install depending on what you want it to do.
