Hello,

We developed (formerly for the internal documentation purposes and for MSI internals demonstration as the database) a new tool - called "Windows Installer Query Tool" based on WIX Deployment Tools Foundation. Now freeware.

It allows to run SQL queries to MSI databases from the MS Excel 2007-2010 sheet via Ribbon user interface. Powerful filtering functionality allows to apply regular expressions and basic filters to the output results.

For instance - we used it for MSI validation and documenting - easy to get file lists or list of components with the condition.

Also it helps to collect these SQL queries and regular expressions in the sheet to keep yourself organized.

I need your feedback about this tool usability and improvement suggestions.
Queries examples are also needed - will include them in the next versions.

New version 1.60 has been released.

Release Notes
Better grouping of MSI Database and MSI Query ribbons;
Query length in the combobox now can be up to 1024 characters;
Some UI controls moved to "Options" combo button;
Installation target directory changed to the "C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Windows Installer Query Tool\" - now you able to save results directly in to the sheet after the query;
Ability to execute query from the currently selected cell;
Some new queries in the Source Data tab.

Introduction
It is always great to hear feedback! In fact great feedback even better. This major improvement release dedicated to it. Contains critically useful features like batch query execution and logging. As a nice bonus - GUID generator, encoder and decoder in "MSI Toolbox" ribbon for component search in the registry together with some MSI update related tasks.

Windows Installer Query Tool - Version 1.86

Introduction
Is this a final release? Running out of ideas how to improve the tool. More feedback required. However, here come some even additional features that I personally needed...

Release Notes
1. New GUIDs could be added in the queries via <NewGUID> and <NewGUIDcoded> hotspots (see example query for ProductCode update). Notice, that this could be used in the batch processing also!
2. InstallShield strings decoder with logging in the toolbox (useful if you open binary InstallShield projects)
3. "Execute Batch" button in "Query Batch" tab for comfortable batch execution

Windows Installer Query Tool - Version 2.00

Introduction

This really worth looking and evaluating! Major improvements and functionality updates. Now nearly complete package processing automation is possible in the sheet... Very useful development tool, especially during batch queries debugging. Try it and buy by providing valuable feedback!

Release Notes
Query generation ability for tables - could be possible to generate SELECT, INSERT and CREATE ones for selected table from "Table Tools"
MSI databases could be opened, closed and saved during batch processing now (<OpenMSIReadOnly - path>, <OpenMSIWrite - path>, <SaveMSI> and <CloseMSI> commands)
"Query History" could be cleaned by using <CleanQueryHistory> command
"Save MSI To" function added with <SaveMSITo - path> command
User interface option to close current MSI database (If unsaved changes noticed - warning will be shown)
Get table function now show key columns with (key) mark and italic formatting
General Information now has decode functionality for InstallShield project files string
Practical query batch example added in to "Query Batch" tab, additional queries in "Source Data" tab
Logging of generated guids and queries has been changed; Result now contains generated artifact
"Execute Batch" button in "Query Batch" behavior changed - now it is not disabled when package is not opened (scripting requirement)
MS Excel sheet appearance adjustments in different tabs

Introduction

This release includes mostly InstallShield strings decoding related enhancements. Nowadays it is very comfortable to work with InstallShield .ISM binary project files.

 

Release Notes

• Message box option in Decode String function for InstallShield now doesn't display value if deselected. It is only written to the log.
• MSI queries now could be executed with on the fly decoding of the InstallShield strings. So if you need to get the table with decoded strings - generate select and execute it with "Decode InstallShield strings" option set.
• Cosmetic UI fixes and enhancements. Decoded strings now displayed as comments.
