Patching Long File Names doesn't work

Here's something weird I came across:

1) Make an standard install where the main executable you're installing has a long file name (like "SuperSetup.exe")
2) install to 98se
3) Apply a patch that updates the main executable (and also some support files in my case)

Applying the patch causes the executable name to be reduced to 8.3 format thereby breaking all the shortcuts to it.

If you apply the patch again, you end up with 2 versions of the executable - one with a long file name and one in 8.3 format.

This happens in 98se and ME, but not 2k.

Anyone else seen this?

I should have replied to this long ago.

This ended up being some funky state the patch or machine was in.

Never was able to reproduce this again.

I think the problem could be a file in use error.  Msi adds it to the list of files to be updated next time windows is started.  Unfortunately these updates take place before Win9X is started so only short names can be used.  Unfortunately I know of no way to overcome this problem.
