We are developing an installation for our app to download off the web. The instmsia.exe, instmsiw.exe and .msi files add 13mb to the package.
i) Is there a way to find out if (and what version) of Windows Installer is on the target system and if it is suitable can we then use an installation without these files.
ii) We would have another package on the server with these files included for those systems with no or older Installer. Comments and help appreciated,

You could use the launcher from vinga systems (see here on InstallSite under Windows installer -> Tools & Tips). It can check the version of msi on the target system, and send users to s URL you specify if it needs to be installed or updated.
