installer service keeps stopping itself

We have a user who had a standard 1607 install error -isscript9.msi usually fixes, but cannot run it and gives error message. 'cannot accesss installer service.'

Investigating in service.msc windows installer is not started. When he starts the service it stops very quickly after with no error. User is on XP home SP2 with 3.1 installer installed( and reinstalled from re-dist).

Has anyone any ideas as the user cannot run any msi's at the moment.

There will almost certainly be information in the Event Log. I presume you've tried re-registering the Windows Installer Service?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm new to this and although I support the stuff when it goes wrong I don't actually create the installs. This site kb article was a useful link:

I'll find out if it fixed it later this week from the user.
